Profi Products Laser Magnetic Chain Alignment Tool L~CAT Line

Today I had the time to try out my new laser tool, purchased from across the pond in the UK from Bikermart Motorcycle Accessories. Their service was fast and efficient, but I can't say the same for Canada Customs, where my tool languished in a container for a week and a half before they released it to Canada Post. Time of the year would have some bearing on that, I presume.

This tool is a tiny little thing and it comes with the three tiny batteries needed. Simple to use by screwing the battery pack in, oread morer out just a bit, to turn the laser on and off. I would suggest here that since this tool is something that may not be used very often, it would probably be a good idea to remove the batteries for storage to prevent possible leakage damage to the tool. There is a tiny plastic sleeve that encases the batteries inside of the removable knob, making them hard to lose.

I gave the sprocket a wipe to ensure no debris would prevent the tool from sitting flat against it. I bought the magnetic version of this line laser, which proved to be the best choice, as you can carry on playing with the chain adjusters to see your results without having to also hold the tool in place. It is also the most expensive of the 4 models of this tool available. My cost to my door was $101.00 CDN.

When I placed it on the sprocket, the misalignment of my chain to the sprocket was quite evident, confirming my thoughts that the very poor adjusting marks that RE gave us on the swing arm are useless. The picture shows what I found. I chose the line laser, instead of the cheaper dot laser, as the wide laser beam makes turning the wheel to see where the laser is hitting unnecessary.

After loosening the axle and fiddling with both sides of the adjusters, I quickly figured out which way they needed to go to get the wheel back in alignment, just by watching the laser move across the chain, all the while also making note if the required slack was in the chain.

Once the laser lined up with all the side plates, I tightened the axle, checked the slack again and then snugged up the adjuster bolts. The next time I need to adjust the chain will be even easier, now that it is sitting as straight as it should be.

My recommendation is two big thumbs up on this tool. If it saves buying new sprockets and a chain early due to premature wear, it has paid for itself with the first use.
